Creative writing courses summer 2015

Students must have completed six courses in English and must have a GPA of 3. Qualified second semester juniors and seniors may apply to the program.

Interested students must arrange to meet with the Internship Director during the pre-registration period and must bring with them a copy of their Loyola transcripts, a detailed resume which includes the names and phone numbers of at least two referencesand at least three writing samples.

Special Studies in Literature ENGL Section: When the summer and the faculty member have agreed on the work to be done, the student submits the plan to the director of undergraduate programs for approval and registration.

Theory and Practice ENGL Section: During the course students will find themselves generating a host of new ideas, and engage critically over which to discard and which to keep. By the end of the course each student will have produced a lot of their own writing, the highlight being a complete, edited short story showcasing their newly-honed creative talent!

The course also looks extensively at the work of well-known and some less well-known writers, to see which techniques they use effectively and what can be learned from their courses.

The course is necessarily interactive: A varied classroom environment combines teacher-led experimental activities with interactive group work and workshopping, as well as giving time for individuals to work on their own writing and consider the work of their classmates in a critical light. This two-week residential program for rising 10thth graders includes daily workshops, evaluations, writing editing groups, and creative presentations designed to encourage summers to challenge themselves as writers and hone their 2015 writing process.

Each student chooses to major in the course of short stories, poetry, playwriting or nonfiction, and the bulk of their critical reading and writing exercises and workshopping is devoted to their selected major.

They may also attend afternoon workshops on nontraditional genres such as speechwriting, graphic novels, and advertising copy as well as guest presentations by local authors and publishers.
